If you are Métis and have a business idea, you might be closer to funding than you think. The Métis Financial Corporation of BC (MFC) offers practical support to help Métis citizens in British Columbia start, grow, or expand their businesses. Regardless of where you are located in BC, we are here to support your goals.

Still, one of the most common questions we hear is simple. Do I qualify?

This blog will help you answer that question. We will walk through the key requirements for applying to MFC and clear up some common misunderstandings about who can access business funding, planning help, and other support.

Who MFC Is For

MFC supports Métis entrepreneurs across British Columbia. This includes people who are:

  • Just getting started
  • Working part-time on a side business
  • Looking to grow or formalize an existing venture
  • Self-employed or transitioning out of traditional work

We provide business loans for Métis citizens and offer guidance, planning support, and access to resources that can turn an idea into a working business.

We also serve a wide range of industries, including:

  • Construction and trades
  • Retail and e-commerce
  • Wellness services
  • Professional consulting
  • Food and hospitality
  • Art, design, and cultural crafts

If you are wondering how to start a Métis business or where to get Métis startup funding, MFC is a trusted place to begin.

Basic Eligibility Criteria

Here are the core requirements for accessing MFC business support:

1. Métis Citizenship

You must have a valid Métis identification.

2. Residency in British Columbia

You must currently live in BC. We are focused on strengthening local Métis businesses, especially in rural and underserved areas.

3. Business Involvement

You must be directly involved in the business. That means you are either the owner or a key operator. We want to support people who are active in building and growing their ventures.

4. Business Viability

To qualify for a business loan in British Columbia through MFC, you need to show that the business is viable and sustainable.

What If You Are Not Sure

You do not need everything in place before reaching out. Even if you are unsure about one or two requirements, it is still worth starting a conversation. Our job is to help you figure out what support is available and how to get ready to apply.

Common Misunderstandings

We often hear questions that come from a place of uncertainty. Here are a few we hear often, along with the real answers.

I work part-time. Can I still apply?
Yes. Many successful Métis entrepreneurs started their business while working other jobs.

My credit is not perfect. Will that disqualify me?
Not necessarily. We look at the full picture, including your plan and commitment. We do not expect perfect credit.

My business is still just an idea. Can I reach out?
Yes. We are here to help you develop that idea into something real.

I am self-employed. Will that count?
Yes. Self-employment is a valid and common business model, especially in smaller communities.

What MFC Offers

Once you meet the basic eligibility criteria, you can access a range of programs and tools that are built to support Métis citizens.

Business Loans for Métis

We offer business loans for Métis that are fair, accessible, and designed around real needs. Whether you are just launching or scaling up, we will work with you to match funding to your goals.

Business Plan Support

We offer business plan support for active applications. Once an application is ready for this step, the MFC will put you in contact with the business plan consultant. This helps you get funding and build confidence in your direction.

Referral to Other Programs

We keep track of BC Métis business grants and Indigenous economic development programs. If another opportunity fits your business, we will keep you informed.

First-Time Home Buyer Program

While this blog focuses on business support, it is worth mentioning that MFC also offers a First-time Home Buyer Program for Métis citizens. This program helps with down payment assistance and guidance through the home buying process. If home ownership is part of your broader plan, we encourage you to ask about this program as well.
